Petersfield History
Petersfield is a market town located 17 miles north of Portsmouth on the A3, it is twinned with two towns, Barentin (France) and Warendorf (Germany). Petersfield has a town railway station on the Portsmouth Direct Line, which gives it excellent access to and from London. It is also an official coach stop on the Portsmouth to London service, offering even more options to travellers and commuters alike.
Petersfield is best known for its ancient burial mounds, which are believed to be around 4000 years old. Historians believed that the burial sites used to number far greater but many were destroyed by the construction of modern housing.
The town used to be well-known for its regular livestock markets, which were held in the town centre. Although these no longer exist, there are still farmer’s fruit and veg markets held in the town on a regular basis.
